Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When do pledge payments begin?

A. Woodlawn Hospital appreciates donors beginning their pledge payments as soon as
convenient for them; the exact date, however, is up to you. You may indicate your preference on the pledge card.

Q. In the event of my death, is my pledge binding on my estate?

A. Your pledge to Woodlawn Hospital's "Second Century of Compassionate Care" Campaign is binding only if your personal representative elects it to be. Many donors consider creating a trust or making a bequest in their wills to fulfill their intentions toward the Hospital should something unforeseen occur.

Q. To whom do I make my check payable?

A. Please make your check payable to Woodlawn Hospital Campaign.

Q. May I volunteer to help on this campaign?

A. By all means, we need and will appreciate your help. Please call Deb Paxton-Huffman at 574-224-1179 to discuss how you can become involved.

Q. What is Woodlawn Hospital?

A. Woodlawn Hospital is an IRS-designated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. On November 2, 1905, the doors of Fulton County's first hospital opened for the purpose of "administering medical, surgical and obstetrical aid to the general public." Known as "The Woodlawn," it was founded by Dr. Winfield Scott Shafer. Dr. Howard Shafer, Dr.
Winfield Shafer's son, operated the Hospital until his death in 1931. Woodlawn Hospital was sold to Dr. Milton E. Leckrone, and under his direction, a two-story brick addition was completed in 1936, and the bed capacity was increased from 15 to 33.

Upon the death of Dr. Leckrone in 1945, Fulton County assumed ownership of Woodlawn Hospital. Dedicated in 1978, the present Woodlawn Hospital, sits serenely on 33 wooded acres, which can be viewed from every patient room.

Q. What is the purpose of Woodlawn Hospital's "Second Century of Compassionate Care" Campaign?

A. To provide a funding mechanism by which the local community can help with the renovation, expansion, equipment, and furniture acquisition for their hospital.

Q. What is Critical Access?

A. In the mid-1980s, advances in medicine dramatically changed the healthcare environment. Reimbursement formulas from third-party payers brought more funds to urban facilities than to rural ones. Revenues of rural hospitals plunged because many medical professionals left for urban hospitals where they could make more money
doing the same type of work. Currently, a national Critical Access program for rural
hospitals has been implemented to right the reimbursement inequities of the past. Since Woodlawn Hospital's designation as a Critical Access facility was obtained, it has collaborated with other healthcare providers in a variety of partnerships to offer services that the community needs. This program is important to Woodlawn
Hospital because it is based on percentage of Medicare volume, rather than just the total number of patients served. Our area has a significant number of senior citizens, so this program helps us provide service when it might not otherwise be feasible.

Q. What services are available at Woodlawn Hospital?

A. Woodlawn Hospital provides services for inpatients and outpatients in the fields of General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Oncology, Cardiology/Cardiopulmonary, Sleep Study, Obstetrics, and General Medicine. The Hospital also offers several specialty programs such as Diabetes Classes, Dietary Counseling, CPR Classes, First Aid Classes, and Prenatal Classes.

Q. Why is this project necessary?

A. In order for Woodlawn Hospital to continue to provide quality healthcare, the Hospital must make changes in key areas of the facility. The proposed renovation and expansion projects are needed to upgrade the Emergency Department, Surgery, Radiology, Laboratory, Cardiopulmonary, Rehab Services, and Physician Office Space, as well as to enhance patient privacy in the Registration area, and meet patient expectations.

Q. How was the decision made to develop this project?

A. In 2004, a study was authorized by the Board of Trustees to develop a master plan for Woodlawn Hospital. Many items were identified in this master plan with the major recommendation being the renovation and expansion of our outpatient service areas. At that time the leadership team of Woodlawn Hospital started the process of looking at how to change our facility to meet the projected needs of Fulton and surrounding counties. In conjunction with the expansion project was the financial analysis of how this project would impact the current and future financial viability of Woodlawn Hospital. This planning and analysis phase lasted approximately 2 years with the decision by the Board of Trustees to start the project in early 2007.

Q. What is the scope of this project?

A. The Hospital will make improvements in the following areas to modernize the facility, improve patient accessibility and comfort, and update the delivery of healthcare:

  • Create an outpatient surgery experience, private rooms, convenient check-in area, as well as easy access for post surgery departure.
  • Expand the front of the facility to create space for a central registration area, with separate cubicles to assure patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Create a public concourse to a new lobby.
  • Construct two waiting areas to separate people waiting for an outpatient procedure from those waiting for emergency services; thereby, reducing the possibility for the spread of infection.
  • Reconfigure outpatient areas to provide expansion for the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, Cardio-Pulmonary, and to bring Outpatient Rehab back on site.
  • Create Medical Office space to allow patients to visit doctors for follow-up visits under the same roof, and increase physician access to patients in the Hospital, before and after surgery. Relocating active staff to the new Medical Office space will create additional room in the current building for more visiting specialists. This will increase the number of specialties offered and increase hospital traffic because more people will be able to remain close to home for medical care.

Q. What is the cost of this project?

A. The renovation project including expansion, modernization, and reconfiguration of the facility will cost $12 million with an additional $1.25 million needed for equipment and furnishings.

Q. Can Woodlawn Hospital afford to do this?

A. Yes, Woodlawn Hospital has completed a cash flow analysis that confirms that Woodlawn Hospital has the ability to service a $12 million dollar debt.

Q. Why should our communities support Woodlawn Hospital's Campaign?

A. Woodlawn Hospital is doing this for you - our patients, our neighbors, and the people we serve in Fulton County and the surrounding areas. We are your Hospital. We have provided quality healthcare for you for more than 100 years. The relationship between the Hospital and the communities we serve is based on a long history of mutual support and trust.

Quality healthcare is as vital to a community's success as schools and businesses. Fulton County and the surrounding areas are fortunate to have a hospital that provides comprehensive services - right here at home. In addition, the Hospital provides enormous economic benefit to the community. With 320 employees and an annual payroll in excess of $12 million, it is one of Fulton County's largest employers.

Communities with up-to-date medical facilities are viewed favorably by new and existing businesses. The proposed project enables the Hospital to continue to anticipate and meet the needs created by the latest technology and improved efficiency.

Q. Who will solicit?

A. Volunteers from the Woodlawn Hospital service area will make personal calls to secure gifts and pledges. All solicitors will have made their own contributions before asking others to do so.

Q. Who will be asked to contribute to Woodlawn Hospital's Campaign?

A. The Woodlawn Hospital Governing Board was the first to be asked to support the campaign financially, along with medical staff and employees. The Hospital is seeking the area-wide support of industry, corporations, businesses, financial institutions, foundations, organizations, and Hospital supporters.

Q. Are gifts tax-deductible?

A. Yes. Woodlawn Hospital is incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The State of Indiana and the federal government encourage voluntary support of these organizations through liberal deduction allowances. All gifts to the campaign are tax-deductible within the regulations of state and federal laws. All donations designated for this project will be held in a segregated account and will be applied only to costs associated with this project.

Q. How will gifts to the campaign be recognized?

A. Donors will be recognized through publicity, publications, and designated giving opportunities. A list of donors will be published when the campaign is completed. Donors' names will also appear in press releases announcing the successful completion of the campaign. Although Woodlawn Hospital encourages donors to accept public acknowledgment of their gifts, we will respect the wishes of those who choose to remain anonymous.

Q. Why a three-to-five year pledge period?

A. The goal of $1.25 million is too high to be reached with out-of-pocket cash gifts. With a three-to-five-year pledge period, donors will be able to maximize their generosity to the campaign. Donors can also benefit from income tax laws
written to encourage gifts to nonprofit institutions like Woodlawn Hospital over a multi-year period.

Q. How much should I give?

A. Only you can answer that question. We ask that you consider the importance of the modernization and expansion of the facility to you and your family. With your generous support, the Hospital will be able to continue providing life-enhancing services for our community well into the future.

Q. Are gifts other than cash accepted?

A. Yes. The campaign will accept gifts of stocks, bonds, insurance policies, real estate, personal property, crops, grain, livestock, works of art, or any item that can be converted to cash. MasterCard and Visa card payments are also
accepted. In light of changes in tax laws, donors are advised to consult their tax advisors in order to achieve the maximum tax benefits for their gifts.

In addition, the Hospital has arranged with the various grain elevators that serve our agricultural community to receive bushels of corn or soy to be gifted to Woodlawn Hospital. Many of the area farmers are deciding to donate one bushel of grain for each acre farmed. The amount you give is your choice, you might choose to give more bushels or you might choose to give less. Or, you might decide to make a cash gift, a pledge, or possibly securities.
